Design Brief and Inspiration

For this assessment I chose the Movement and energy, because what I want to discover is the moving of everyday life, especially the potential movement and energy.
This work concentrates on the feeling of potential movement and energy - heartbeat of people everywhere. This image can apply on many things such as T-shirt and shoes.
The inspiration is a combination of images created by different artists.
Firstly, the BLOCKER (2010) by Marius Watz (http://mariuswatz.com/2010/04/22/blocker/).
Secondly, A Mathematical Theory of Communication (2014) by Casey Reas (http://reas.com/mathematical_theory/). Marius Watz creates blocker by using vibration of sounds, Thus, this assignment uses this inspiration from BLOCKER to trace the heartbeat of every human being. "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" by Casey Reas (http://reas.com/mathematical_theory/) also shows the vibration of information "in lines".
Therefore, by comparing with heartbeat diagram (http://beatloneafib.blogspot.com.au/p/how-to-monitor-your-heart.html), These websites assist me because there is one thing that they share - they are all discovering hidden energy and movement of things that we cannot see by eyes. There are always moving things that we saw, but I am inspired by amplifying the hidden things to get a more obvious vision. Heart is a hidden movement and energy source for the world that we have not seen, and this movement may assist us to create a deep feeling of other people's existence, despite non of us actually fully understands each other. Therefore, the heartbeat of individuals is concerned since every people are actually moving, not only by moving limbs but also moving hearts. Hence to amplify moving hearts inspires me to make this image, the movement and energy topic is used - the heart can determine the potential movement and energy of people.

Process

The inspiring information above can be perfectly combined to my work and change it into abstract form: vibrating rectangles are grouped together into vibrating lines. This is also inspired by BLOCKERS and Casey Reas Design mentioned above. I think that vibration of rectangles can perfectly match my idea. To tracing heartbeat means "tracking potential movement and energy of every human body". Potential movement and energy are embodied in every length and distance between each two rectangles every line. Long rectangles represent heavier (pounding) heartbeat, while shorter rectangles represent lighter heartbeat. The longer distance between two rectangles in one line, the slower heartbeat is made. Those all shows the movement and energy of heart.
Therefore, I decide to have them all done in rectangles. Starting from randomness and noise inspiration in peep (http://peepproject.com/tutorials/tutorial/15/view), the first sketch is simply one lines with properties shown above. Then because of the first sketch is monotonous, I developed another sketch that contains several lines in different colour, which represents several people. This is a great change, but I feels that it is difficult to understand that why there are several lines that represents several people in here, thus I created another sketch - by flooding the vibrating heartbeat lines on a 400*400 greyscale background, it actually shows that "everywhere you can feel the heartbeat of others". This is a new inspiration which is obtained from the development process of my sketch. The changing greyscale represents "day and night" in daily life.
However, there are not the same as what I want to present this time, due to the chaos of lines thus the vibration is not clearly presented. Hence, I deliberately created two groups of vibrating lines, and make different distance with each lines in one group, at the same time changes the length and width of blocks in randomness, sometimes every group of lines translate in different specific ranges. I finally managed to control this work - when translating each group of vibrating lines there are the feeling of randomness, and changing in movement and energy can be seen through this image by comparing each vibrating horizontal lines: different distance, different width and length of blocks, it seems that they are reflecting the mood of people, which can actually create a great influence on movement and energy of hearts. The difference in colour (like artworks by Casey Reas mentioned above), the width and length of rectangles between each vibrating horizontal lines demonstrates the difference of everybody, and also discovers the potential movement and energy in heart influenced by brain. Another important point is that the length of rectangle can also represent the energy which people have comparing with each vibrating lines. For example, if this line has much longer rectangles than another line, it can be deduced that this line represents more energetic person. Therefore, by tracing the heartbeat of human beings, it can assist the potential movement of human body becomes much more obvious and clearly presented, plus that variety demonstrates that "people are continuing changing"
